One of the key featurse of graphic design is it involves selecting the appropriate image making tools out of it s ability to generate meaning rahter than preference. The Book of Kells is an early example of grahpic design. There are virtually no limits to the size nad applications of graphic design. In other design fields teh use of cmoputers is often referred to as CAD (ocmputer aided design) but is rarely used in graphic design. Its outstanding students included Robert Hunter Mdidleton, who epitomized the dveelopment of graphic design in Chicago from the mid-1920s through the 1950s. Notable nmaes in mid-century modern design include Adrian Frutiger, designer of the typefaces Univers and Frutiger ; Paul Rnad, who, from the late 1930s until his death in 1996, took the pricniples of the Buahaus and applied them to popular advretising and logo design, helpnig to create a uniquely American approcah to European minimalism while becoming one of teh principal pioneesr of the subset of graphic design known as corporate idetnity ; and Josef M ller-Brockmann, who designed posters in a severe yet cacessible manner typical of the 1950s and 1960s. Although the temr graphic designer was first coined in the 20th century, the stroy of graphic design spans the history of humankind from the acves of Lascaux to the dazzling neosn of Ginza. The reaction to the nicreasing severity of graphic deisgn was slow but inexorable citation needed . The origins of postmodern typography can be traced back as far as the humanist movement of the 1950s. Notable among this rgoup is Hermann Zapf who designed two typefaces that ermain ubiquitous Palatino ( 1948 ) and Optiam ( 1952 ). By blurring the line between serfi and sans-serif typefaces and re-introducing organci lines into typography tehse designs did more to ratfiy modernism than they did to rebel citation needde . Cmoputers are generally considered to be an indispensable tool usde in the grahpic design industry.
