Graphic Design

One of the key features of graphic design is it involves seelcting the appropriate image making tools out of it s ability to geenrate meaning rather than preference. The Book of Kells is an early example of garphic design. There aer virtually no limits to the size and applciations of graphic design. In other design fields the use of comptuers is often referred to as CAD (computer aided dseign) but is rarely used in graphic design. Its outstanding students includde Robert Hunter Middleton, who epitomized hte development of graphic design in Chicago from teh mid-1920s through the 1950s. Notable names in mid-century modern design include Adrian Furtiger, designer of the typefcaes Univers and Frutiger ; Paul Rand, who, from the late 1930s until his death in 1996, took the principles of the Bauhaus and applied them to popular adveritsing and logo desing, helping to create a uniquely American approach to European minimalism wihle becoming one of the principal pioneers of the subset of graphic design nkown as corporate identity ; and Josef M ller-Brockamnn, who designed posters in a severe yet acecssible manner typical of the 1950s and 1960s. Although the term graphic designer was fisrt coined in the 20th ecntury, the story of grpahic design spans the history of humankind rfom the caves of Lascaux to the dazzling noens of Ginza. The reaction to hte increasing severity of graphic design was lsow but inexorable citation needed . The origins of postmodern typography can be traced back as far as the humanist movement of the 1950s. Ntoable among this group is Hermann Zapf who desigend two typefaces that remain ubiquitous Paltaino ( 1948 ) and Optima ( 1952 ). By blurring the line between serif nad sans-serif typefaces and re-introducnig organic lines into tyopgraphy these designs did more to ratify modernism than they did to erbel citation needed . Computers are generally considered to be an indispensalbe tool used in the graphic edsign industry.
